Taxpayers Make $25 Billion Profit According to Treasury

The Treasury announced today that it got rid of one of its financial meltdown-era portfolios of mortgage-backed securities and made a $25 billion profit.

The department bought $225 billion worth of mortgage-backed securities (mostly guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) amidst the financial crisis in 2008–2009. In early 2011, the agency announced the sale of those securities, paying back taxpayers about $250 billion.

The Treasury considers this a success, however it’s important to note that should the mortgages behind those securities collapse, taxpayers will feel the sting since Fannie and Freddie guarantee them. And who keeps Fannie and Freddie going? You and me.

Taxpayers spent more than $150 billion to rescue the two mortgage giants, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency projects it will cost another $200 billion to support them for the next two years. In

Make Your Own Playdough (73/365)

Our children have several small tubs of playdough, both the name brand Play-Doh and other brands of similar material, that theyve received as gifts over the years. The contents of those tubs have been played with, sculpted, mashed, combined, and used in countless different ways.

Its actually a toy that Sarah and I quite like as it encourages our children to make whatever they want from it. Its an incredibly open-ended toy (as long as you avoid the various plastic factories that channel the playdough into some specific style of play).

Our kids make sculptures of people, make checker sets, make pretend sandwiches, mix the different colors together to see what new colors are created, find ways to make perfect (or close to it) spheres and cubes, and so on.

Eventually, though, the playdough gets old. It dries out. It gets contaminated with something due to dropping on the floor. An overzealous child throws some away during cleanup. It gets mixed together until you have an ugly brown lump.

Going out to the store to buy new batches of playdough would add up in cost.

Credit card fraud hit lowest levels for a decade

Credit card fraud levels have reached a new ten-year low, as losses continue their downward trend.

The UK Card Association revealed that as well as fraud hitting the lowest level for a decade, online banking fraud losses have also decreased.

Over the past three years credit card fraud fell by nearly 45%. In the last year alone, theft has decreased by 7% to just £341 million compared to £365.4 million in 2010.

An increase in security measures for online banking and telephone banking has made it much harder for fraudsters to bypass the system and get their hands on consumers’ cash.

Melanie Johnson, Chair of The UK Cards Association claimed that the fall in fraud losses was “clear proof that our endeavours to fight fraud are packing a punch.”

“Driving down fraud and keeping cards safe continues to be a priority for the industry. This is the third year card fraud losses have fallen.”

“Customers have also played their part in driving down losses by taking heed of advice about looking after their personal and financial details. Fortunately,
