Your Take: Would You Raise Your Own Food?

After reading a New York Times story about raising your own rabbits and then listening to an NPR show on raising your own chickens in your backyard for food, I jokingly told my lovely wife that I’d be setting up an area in our backyard for our new petting zoo. We’ve been trying to eat more local produce (we like supporting local businesses, we automatically eat only what is in season, and it’s often tastier than buying it from the store) but we’ve never made that leap for meat.

She seemed puzzled at why I’d want an actual petting zoo in our backyard until I mentioned we’d only have rabbits and chickens. She remembered that on our honeymoon to Hawaii, we ate a lot of fresh eggs at the bed and breakfasts we stayed in. Fresh as in they just popped out of the chickens and were still warm (we washed them before we used them). They were delicious and I always joked I’d like to get chickens so we could eat hour old eggs.

She seemed amenable to the idea of eating eggs from chickens but she wasn’t a fan of the rabbit idea. I consoled her

3-Month Homebuyer Tax Credit Extension

There have been a lot of news reports of a potential 3-month extension of the $8,000 Homebuyer Tax Credit and those reports are all correct, albeit a little misleading. The bill they voted on would extend the deadline for closing a home sale as long as there was a signed contract by the original signing deadline of April 30th. So this doesn’t extend the tax credit itself, just the deadline for paperwork process. If you didn’t have a signed contract by April 30th, nothing has changed for you. If you did and the process has dragged on much longer than you planned, then you’ll get until April 30th (as long as the measure passes the Senate).

The House of Representative voted 409 to 5 to pass HR 5623 Homebuyer Assistance and Improvement Act of 2010. The measure will now go to the Senate for a vote and, assuming they approve it, will go to President Obama for signature. The Senate had included a similar provision in a much larger tax package that didn’t secure enough votes.

3 Ways to Kill the Penny

You all probably know my stance on the penny, I think we should kill the penny. Unfortunately, the only legislator willing to put some teeth in the move was ousted after his involvement in a bunch of scandals in 2007. Since then, there hasn’t been a peep out of Congress on the issue though I suspect it’s because there are a lot of other, more pressing, issues on the docket.

So, it’s up to us to figure out a way to give the penny (and maybe even the nickel) the boot.

Why Kill The Penny?

Before we go into how to kill the penny, let’s take a look at why. The main reason is that it’s utility as a coin is very limited, it’s expensive to produce, and it consumes a lot of resources. The main reason why it’s expensive to produce is because it contains zinc, which is getting more expensive each year as demand for zinc grows in places like China.
