Christmas Planning: Lists and Spreadsheets

Budgeting your Christmas expenses can seem overwhelming but it is actually very easy. You should prepare yourself for the holidays by making lists and/or using spreadsheets to track everything. This will help you stay organized and help you prepare for all your expenses during the holiday season. Making a Christmas list is not just for Santa to check it twice. The lists are for you to check so that you have a budget and plan of attack in place to handle the holiday with as little stress as possible.

Include: who you are buying for, what you need to buy for your holiday feast, decorations, and anything else you will need for your Christmas. Making a few different lists will help keep you organized during the holiday hustle and bustle. You can make a list of the people you are getting a gift for, make another list for all the dinner ingredients you will need, and another list for holiday decorations. Include cost estimates for everything. After you have purchased your items, check them off so you know what you already bought, and if you want to see how close you are to budget, note the difference in cost. Break your lists down according to what will be easiest for you to manage.

Spreadsheets are a great way to stay organized once you have made all your purchases. After you buy your gifts, make a spreadsheet on your computer (or by hand) and write in one column the name of the person and then next to the name write what you bought them and how much you spent. You can also do the same for the rest of the things on your list, such as decorations and food.

These spreadsheets will help you see how much you spent during the season and on what. The lists will help you plan out your procedure and the spreadsheet will help you calculate all the money that went into the gifts, food and the decorations. Save the spreadsheets on your computer and create a new one each year to see the differences in your planning and spending from year to year. Create financial goals based on the results to lessen the impact of next Christmas and see how well you can stick to them.
