How PeachMac Competes With Apple

PeachMac’s founders, Darryl and Anne Lyndon Peck, have been in the Apple/Macintosh market for over 20 years. In 2007, they decided to make time for their family, and so opened a small retail and service store specializing in Apple products in Athens, Georgia.

Quickly, Peck found that his new business venture posed a challenge: How could he maintain and support the Apple brand, while also being competitive with Apple stores?

He spoke about this with Inc.coms Nicole Carter.

His secret?

PeachMac is an Apple Premier Specialist, which is the highest level of independent sellers the brand has. It means that more than 70 percent of the stores computer sales are Apple, and for us its a 100 percent. But where we stand apart is in accessories. Whereas they sell maybe 300 or so different accessories, we sell around 1,500. We also test everything, and make sure it is up to snuff for our customer.

What theyre doing seems to be working. They now have eight locations.

Hot Option Plays: Will Bonds Rally, Yields Go Down?

Cusicks Corner I thought the market was going to get a little lift into the After Hours with Finance, XLF, and Tech, QQQ/XLK, leading but that is not the case, squeezing more longs out of the market. I have ratcheted down my size in trades at this stage, and will be watching the headlines for any movement on the debt debate. As I mentioned last week with the uncertainty on the debt ceiling, purchasing some market insurance like puts on a major index and buying some Gold exposure might be worthwhile to consider. The GDP data will be watched closely especially since the data this week with bad orders and better claims has the market apprehensive on economic growth. The Michigan sentiment data will be monitored to see if there is a shift, much like we have seen in the Put/Call ratio. See you Midday.

Stock market averages were holding gains with help from economic data midday, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered its fifth consecutive loss on another day of cautious trading Thursday.

Consumer Confidence Picks Up In July

Consumers aren’t exactly feeling rosy about the economy, but in July, their confidence picked up slightly as they hung their hopes on an improving job market in the future.

The Conference Board, a New York-based business research group, said its Consumer Confidence Index for July rose to 59.5 from 57.6 in June, showing optimism about the economy picked up slightly from month to month.

“Overall, consumers remain apprehensive about the future, but some of the concern expressed last month has abated,” said Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Center, in a statement.

According to the report, consumers were less content with their current financial conditions.

Instead, hope for an improving economy in the future was the main driver behind the overall increase in optimism. The report’s so-called Expectations Index rose, even though the Present Situation Index fell.

Only 13.4% of participants in the study said current business conditions were “good,” marking a decline from 13.7% the month before. Read all post…

Step Forward In Water Filtration

Pat Farrelly is currently in the process of patenting a unique water filtration system that he believes will revolutionize water filtering for commercial and humanitarian purposes. His invention, Aqua-Nu, took five years to develop in his own kitchen.

Farrelly said that Aqua-Nu had multiple applications, from filtering water for individual houses and group schemes to rainwater harvesting and small-scale filtration.

‘‘We can turn any container into a water-filtering device, he said.’ ‘We are interesting because we have microbiological capability. Our technology can prevent a microbe one-quarter the size of a red blood cell from getting through.

The finished product is just six weeks old and, following the verification of independent tests, Farrelly embarked on the patenting process. Aqua-Nu have applied for patents in 67 different countries, 42 of which have already been granted.

He said that Aqua-Nu had fielded inquiries from companies in several sectors, including waste water management. It has
